Barbie Gets a Makeover (Scary-Style)

For those of you who, like myself, found the urge to alter your Barbie Doll irrepressible, the site Altered Barbie is right up your alley. The site showcases young girls' favorite doll in various new styles and situations. Originating in San Francisco and now international, Altered Barbie seeks to bring the under-the-radar artists to the public's attention through the site as well as exhibits and events. On the October calendar, you can check out the recent event "The Barbie Diaries: Barbie Puppet Theater". I can only imagine what that must have been like.

Reading the history of Altered Barbie is just as interesting as perusing through the dolls themselves (some of which are for sale). Apparently, in the early days, Mattel was not so happy with their golden girl being shown in not-so-kid-friendly outfits and compromising positions. It took some time and some lawyering to be able to use the dolls in art. But once it was all said and done, the world was given the gift of Altered Barbie, and I believe we are a better world because of it.
I have included pics of my favorite dolls below:

BARBIE CUT IN HALF
GHOST OF MARIE ANTOINETTE
GHOST OF ELIZABETH BATHORY
BURY YOUR OWN BARBIE
KALI MA
BE MY VALENTINE
